…seriously injure two other policemen for impounding motorcycles
…tMurdered police superintendent had only nine months to retire
Some commercial motorcycle riders, popularly called Okada, on Thursday, went wild in the Ajao Estate area of Isolo, Lagos, disarming and shooting dead a Superintendent of Police, K. S Abonde, with the gun snatched from him.
They also allegedly used the seized gun to shoot two other police officers, who were seriously injured and currently in critically condition in an undisclosed hospital.
The murdered police officer, it was gathered, had planned to retire from the force in nine months time to begin the practice of Law, having obtained both Bachelor’s, Master’s degrees in Law and called to the Bar.
Recall that security personnel attached to the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit (Taskforce), including some policemen, had already impounded about 410 commercial motorcycles across the state as of Thursday for allegedly operating on prohibited routes.
First News learnt that the incident occurred at about 6pm on Thursday, along Asa Afariogun Road by a branch of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, when the officer led other policemen to impound commercial motorcycles operating in the area.
The policemen, it was gathered, had successfully impounded some of the motorcycles for allegedly violating the Lagos State Traffic Law, when the aggrieved riders mobilised their colleagues to attack the officers.
Some residents of the area, however, alleged that most of the Okada riders operating inside and around Ajao Estate were mainly from the Northern part of the country.
Residents, who pleaded anonymity, disclosed that after shooting dead Superintendent Abonde, the rampaging okada riders ran towards the police station in the area, where they allegedly shot two more officers with the seized gun.
The violence was said to have caused pandemonium in the area with residents scampering to safety.
An unspecified number of persons were said to have also been injured during the attack.
State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Adekunle Ajisebutu, had yet to issue any statement as of the time of filing this report on Friday.
