A member of the Kwara State House of Assembly representing Balogun/Ojomu Constituency of Offa Local Government, Hon. Saheed Popoola has said that the request by the State governor, Mallam Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq to obtain a N35B bond was considered and approved on the same day by the Assembly.
Hon. Popoola who was speaking on a biweekly programme, Ifokanbale Hour, on Harmony FM anchored by Adesemowo Adegogo, also said the time it would take Kwara State to repay the N35 billion is 15 years as against the 8 years put out by the government.
It would be recalled that Rafiu Ajakaye, Chief Press Secretary to governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq had while contributing to a programme on Sobi FM last Thursday insisted that it was not true that the House approved the governor’s request on the same day it was made.
But his position was contradicted by Hon. Popoola who is a ranking member of the House.
Popoola, who said he only has issues with the process and was not against the 35 billion naira bond, also said he was concern that the request seeking the approval of the House did not come with attachments of projects the government intends to execute with the huge bond.
“The government must not be coercing the House of Assembly. House of Assembly is not a subsidiary of Government House. House of Assembly is an independent government arm.
“What I vehemently against is for the government to bring 35 billion request and to ask that it should be approved immediately. That suggests that you have already spent the money and only wanted to backdate it. How can you bring a whole N35 billion request to the House and insisted that it must be passed same day?” Popoola queried.
The issue of the N35B bond proposed by the Kwara State government has generated a lot of controversy, with a large section of the Kwara populace, especially key opposition figures, kicking against the move.
